Preparing for the Future

Last week, I met with the Director of the Small Business Center of Forsyth Tech. We had a wonderful discussion about programs that area available and how they relate to Stokes County. They assured me that they are willing to do everything within their power to help the residents of Stokes County. I believe them. Below, I am posting classes that will be available at Camp Sertoma this fall:
Computer Basics 
This course is designed for the computer novice
and uses Microsoft Windows to demonstrate how to
operate a computer while teaching basic computer
terminology.
NOTE. This course requires a textbook.

Date: November 24-December 17, TTH,
9 am-noon
Location: Sertoma
Electrician Helper 
This program consists of four classes taken during
one semester. After completing all four classes,
students will earn an Electrician Helper Certificate.
Students successfully completing this program will
be able to qualify for entry-level employment with
electrical contractors, maintenance companies and
apartment complexes.
Prerequisite: An HRD course.
NOTE. This is an intro class.

Introduction to Carpentry 
This course prepares the student for an occupation
in the carpentry trade. Topics include the study of
safety procedures, tool identification and the use and
selection of tools. Techniques include wall framing,
building partitions, roofs, doors and windows.
Included will be the understanding of basic materials
and construction practices to layout and construct
foundations and flooring systems. Instruction
includes lecture and live projects.

Introduction to Keyboarding 
Learn keyboarding skills using a computer keyboard.
Course topics include focusing alphabetic keys
and the numeric key pad. The student will become
familiar with numeric, symbol and function keys
and will drill for speed, accuracy and keyboard
applications. Keyboarding (typing) is an essential
skill for efficient use of software applications.

Introduction to Masonry 
This course prepares the student for a career in
masonry/bricklaying. The class focuses on job
estimates, job layout, reading of blueprints, preparing
and mixing mortar, applying formulas and the
laying of bricks and block. Industrial safety is covered
in this course.

Landscape Technician 
This course covers the various aspects essential to
achieving a successful outdoor living environment.

Painting: Mixed Media— Stokes County
During this four-week course, you will create at least
three projects to include a floor mat, painting on a
found object and making lovely frames from yard
sale finds.
NOTE. Materials for the floor mat will be provided
and we will pool our other “finds” so there will be
minimal cost for supplies.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Starting a Business
Presenter: Blair Abee
In this seminar, participants identify the personal qualities and skills of successful
business owners and other “Keys to Success” that contribute to the success of small
businesses. Participants assess their current skills and knowledge of small business
ownership and develop a learning plan to assist them in growing successful
enterprises. Participants review the legal and administrative steps necessary to
getting a business started and examine the qualities of a model business.

How to Write a Convincing Business Plan
Presenter: Dr. Notis Pagiavlas
In this seminar, participants will evaluate the business plan format and the
importance of an Executive Summary for attracting interest and investment.
Seminar attendees will have an opportunity to review sample chapters in a variety
of business plans to evaluate their own concept development. The business plan
seminar will include examples of market feasibility of the business concept, a
marketing plan and start-up cost analysis. Participants will utilize a variety of tools
to review and evaluate examples of various business plans.
